Am I Ready for Luxury Cruising?

By Paul Mullins

Am I Ready for Luxury Cruising?

Your current cruise choices may help answer that question. A practical look at when a premium cruise is still your best fit, and when a luxury line deserves consideration.

Your current cruise choices may help answer that question.

Think about how you book a cruise today compared with your first few trips. Perhaps you once chose an inside cabin and now prefer a veranda. You may have moved into suites, started booking specialty restaurants or decided that smaller excursions are worth the additional cost.

You may still enjoy a large ship, but having somewhere quieter to spend part of the day has become more important.

Those choices are worth looking at when you plan your next cruise. If you are already paying for more space, additional services and private areas, a luxury cruise may deserve consideration. The question is whether it offers the vacation you want at a price you are comfortable with.

Look at What You Already Choose

When we talk with clients about luxury cruising, it helps to start with their recent trips. What did they enjoy? What did they pay extra for? What would they change?

A larger suite may be important because you spend time in your accommodation and want room to relax. You might prefer specialty dining because you enjoy a quieter restaurant. Private excursions may let you explore at your own pace instead of following a group schedule.

Understanding why you make those choices helps us recommend the right experience. It also gives us a more useful starting point than simply asking whether you want to try a luxury cruise.

If your current arrangements give you everything you want, there may be little reason to change. But if you keep adding services and upgrades and still come home wishing parts of the trip had been different, it is worth discussing the alternatives.

How Much of the Large Ship Do You Use?

Large ships offer a great deal, and for many travelers that is part of their appeal. You may enjoy the entertainment, the variety of restaurants and the ability to find something happening well into the evening.

A ship-within-a-ship experience can be a good fit when you want those choices along with more privacy. You have access to the larger ship while also having dedicated spaces and services associated with your accommodation.

For some of our clients, that combination is exactly what they want. It can also work well for a group whose members have different interests.

But consider where you actually spend your time. If you rarely leave the private areas and have little interest in the larger ship's activities, you may want to look at a cruise where the overall atmosphere is closer to what you enjoy in those spaces.

That does not mean you have outgrown a large ship. It means we should consider whether you still use enough of it to make it the right choice.

Be Specific About Comfort and Service

"Luxury" can mean different things to different travelers. It is more helpful to talk about what makes you comfortable.

Do you want more room in your suite, or are you more concerned about how crowded the public areas feel? Does a quiet place to read matter more than another entertainment venue? How important is an unhurried dinner?

The size of the ship alone will not answer those questions. We need to look at the particular vessel, its layout and the experience it offers.

Service deserves the same attention. You may appreciate staff who remember your preferences and follow through without your having to ask several times. If that has become an important part of your vacation, it should be part of the discussion when choosing your next cruise.

The more specific you can be about what you value, the better we can help you compare your options.

Consider How You Want to Spend Your Time Ashore

Your interests in the destinations may have changed as well. On an early visit, you might want to see the main attractions. On a return trip, you may prefer a smaller tour, time to explore independently or an evening ashore.

Look beyond the list of ports. Arrival and departure times matter, as do the available excursions and the arrangements for getting where you want to go. An itinerary that looks appealing on paper may leave less time ashore than you expected.

If destinations are becoming a bigger part of your decision, we can give more attention to the itinerary and how you would spend each day. You do not have to choose a luxury line to have a rewarding experience ashore, but your priorities may lead you toward different ships and voyages than you have considered before.

Compare the Trip You Would Actually Book

Before deciding that luxury cruising costs too much, compare it with the premium cruise you would actually purchase.

Start with your preferred accommodation, then account for the things you would add. Those might include beverages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, excursions and gratuities. Hotel stays and transfers also belong in the overall trip budget.

Then look carefully at the alternative. What does that fare include? What would you still pay for separately? Are the included services things you would use?

Inclusions vary by cruise line and fare, so the details need to be checked for the specific sailing. A higher fare does not mean every part of your trip is covered.

Luxury may still cost more, sometimes considerably more. A complete comparison helps you understand the difference and decide whether the additional expense is worthwhile for you.

There is also the convenience to consider. If you dislike checking what your package covers or making additional purchases throughout the trip, a more inclusive fare may appeal to you. That convenience has value, even when it does not produce a lower total price.

A Premium Cruise May Still Be Your Best Choice

There is no reason to change cruise categories simply because you have traveled more.

If you enjoy large productions, a busy evening schedule and plenty of activities, those features should remain part of your decision. The same applies when traveling with children, grandchildren or friends who want different things from their vacation.

You might be happiest staying with a premium line and choosing a different suite or itinerary. A ship-within-a-ship experience may give you the privacy and service you want while keeping the larger ship available. Or a luxury ship may offer an atmosphere that suits you better.

Each is a reasonable choice. What matters is understanding what you would gain and what you might miss.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Next Cruise

At Nova Via Travels, we work primarily with premium cruise lines and above, with an emphasis on luxury, groups and ship-within-a-ship experiences.

We begin by talking about how you like to travel. Tell us what you enjoyed on your last cruise, what frustrated you and what you would like to do differently. We can then look at the options and compare the full cost of the trip, including the arrangements needed before and after your cruise.

You do not need to decide whether you are a "luxury traveler" before that conversation. You may simply want more space, a quieter atmosphere or a trip that requires less effort on your part.

If you are wondering whether a luxury cruise would suit you, get in touch. We would be glad to help you work through the choices.
